Get a head start on all the Holiday decorating from Halloween to Christmas and Hanukkah. These fabric bowls and place mats are fun and easy to make. Great to decorate your home with or make some as gifts.
It's that time of year again...move in day at universities across the nation. Our youngest has been boarding in a furnished home all summer while she worked in Phoenix so her furniture has been stashed at home in Yuma. We borrowed our son's pickup to take all her STUFF back to Phoenix (approximately 200 mile) and out of our spare room. Since his truck is a little newer and has a few million miles less than Brad's truck it should have been a breeze.
We set off and made it almost to the halfway point when we lost the serpentine belt. For those of my friends back east it is hard to picture just how empty our roads can be so I will post photos. It was noon and the temperature was approximately 105 F (40.6 C). the towing company told us it would be 3 hours before they would arrive for us. Not one to waste a minute I got out my knitting!

It turns outs that the little town we were just 15 miles short of ( Pop. 1700) couldn't fix the truck so we ended up being towed another 60 miles to the outskirts of Phoenix where we got the truck repaired.
We are back home and not anxious to head out of town anytime soon! By the way the photos are looking east, west, north and south.

When I decided to move my sewing classes into my home studio Brad and I talked about putting in an outside door directly into the studio. His vote was to wait until I had full classes and needed it. My vote was to install the door while my classes were still small so as to cause the least amount of disruption possible. I won! We had a small setback because the lumber company delivered the wrong door, luckily being well acquainted with Murphy's law we had not started on the opening until the door was delivered. Three weeks later the correct door was delivered yesterday but since it is only primed Brad will paint it before we install it. My part in this project is to empty the shelves over and below the counter that has to come out for the door. This is one area that I had not really gone through when I reorganized my studio as a class because let's face it "out of site, out of mind". it will give me a chance to organize and sort though that stuff I guess. Hopefully we can do the work in between my two current sessions.

It is still HOT here in Yuma, in fact it is hot enough that we are hosing down our old horse every hour so that she will stay cool however I have to get busy making samples for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas for upcoming classes. It is hard to think of brown, orange, red and green when the weather outside is yellow, blue and other summer colours! keep on watching for the first samples.

Last week was fun, we had rain twice in the same week...uh month, uhm, even better twice in the same season! The dogs didn't find it as much fun as we did though because they consider rain the most unnatural state and to be forced into it cruel and unusual punishment. On the first day that it rained we also were getting irrigated so we had to race out and lock up the horse and the goat. The goat was doing everything possible to avoid crossing that expanse of water between him and the corral but Dragon was having a blast splashing through the yard. I think that it brought back memories of the kids riding in the Colorado river in the summer.
I hope to have photos pretty soon of a project that one of my students has been working on. It is a pencil skirt with a twist. it is an ambitious project for her and so we are both anxious for her to finish it up. In the meantime, I am getting my fall classes set and making up some class samples.
I just finished this bag- A duffle bag the perfect size to pack for a long weekend away. It will also stow quite nicely in the overhead racks of a plane.
I will be offering sessions in blocks of four two hour weekly classes for $120.00. The first session will be available either 6/11, 6/18/, 6/25, 7/2/ or 6/13/, 6/20, 6/27, 7/11 from 6:30-8:30pm. They consist of "Getting To Know Your Machine" with all its options and feet as well as completing a project of a simple skirt, drawstring pants, a non-tailored shirt or possibly a simple dress. Future classes will move on from there and may also cover beginning quilting and home decor projects as well.
One thing about offering classes from my home studio is that is will force me to be neat and organized!

I am headed to Scotland on the 7th along with our daughter, my aunt and a friend. Once we arrive we meet up with another friend and head off to the Hebrides and the Northern coast of Scotland. It will be a drastic change from our dry, hot Yuma weather. I am very busy finishing up a class sample for JoAnns as well as some personal sewing on items needed for my trip. It won't be all fun and games on the trip though since I am taking my trusty Ipad and plan on working up some curricula for up coming classes. Standby for some great photos!

Since my sewing area has been shrinking I decided to pull out everything and try to organize it. Does anyone ever have an organized sewing room? I have sewing/knitting/dyeing stuff, then I have office stuff for FFC ( the projects I worked overseas with), left over real estate stuff including some boxes with miscellaneous supplies, and the files that I need to keep for 2 more years. My room is about 20 by 10. I have counters and work space around but they are filled! I did decide to use my scanner to get rid of the paper clutter which is helping with fresh things but I do need to go back and scan old files to get rid of the hard copies. Unfortunately this ranks about the same as getting a tooth pulled, after all why do this when you can sew? :) I also have several boxes of old photos (the one craft I am not into is scrap-booking). A friend of mine who is not a collector and has a serene minimalist home suggested that I get rid of it all and when I sew just buy enough for the project and when it is done toss any left over fabric. Are you kidding me? Those are valuable scraps. Anyhow during my sewing I came across this old letter from Erma Bombeck to me. How cool is that?

Just kidding! We already have the baby in mind for the gifts, he will be born in a few weeks which will make the outfit just the right size when our weather is cool enough to wear it. The pants were a challenge since I had no pattern to work from, just measurements from a 6 month old and some guidelines from the internet.
I don't really make New Year's resolutions but I do sit down and look at last years goals to see how many I made and if I didn't make them why not? Did circumstances change or did the goal no longer seem so reasonable? Then I make new goals. Among this year's goals are a total revamping of my Etsy storefront. I am not sure what the changes will be but hopefully I will figure it really soon!
Beginning this month I will be teaching some classes at our local JoAnns. That will be a new adventure for me. I am looking forward to it and have a couple of people that I know waiting to sign up for one of my March classes already.
2012 was a year of change for us- Brad retired after 34 years with USDA, we cut back on some of our volunteer hours with several local organizations for various reasons and I left my part time work for the Humane Society. So here's to 2013- may it be happy and healthy.

Traditionally that is when we get our Christmas stuff up. I also put away our everyday table linens and put out the Christmas stuff. Now that one leads to a little controversy in my home: first there is the issue of the Advent wreath it self- just try finding one purple candle let one 3, the pink on is usually not so hard, THEN try finding a white pillar candle that doesn't smell. This year the local Catholic store had some sets in stock but the white pillar came from Wal-Mart. AFTER loads of sniffing and sneezing I chose one that is called clean laundry and has a fairly mellow scent (not what my generic detergent smells like!)
Now we move onto the dishes- I put away my everyday dishes and move into a Christmas set. They too can be hard to find- I like a traditional pattern, unfortunately my first set was a pretty pattern of red cardinals, holly leaves and berries with a gold trim. I bought it from the Dollar Store. The complaints from the males in the family were immediate and heartfelt" we can't put these in the microwave" ( don't even ask how they found out- I heard it in great detail, I am just lucky I have a microwave and a house still!) and the bowls are shallow with a brim so somehow the cereal didn't taste right. Okay, I promised that I would look for a new set that was also affordable, had no metallic trim and did have traditional cereal bowls. Not so easy in that I am not a fan of Frosty, or elves etc. The Christmas tree designs were okay but kind of plain and ugly to me- except for the ones that we couldn't afford. Finally I have a set found in the thrift shop- the bowls are not as good but they can live with them! Heather on the other hand understands that the beauty of a nice dish should trump all other considerations, but since she is away at college I am outnumbered.

Talking with some fellow sewists lately- they hated doing zippers and preferred buttons! Honestly I don't know why- a zipper is so easy- a few pins two rows of stitching and DONE. In my experience no matter how often you practice a buttonhole on a scrap of fabric to exactly duplicate your garment it will come out perfectly on the practice piece but once you switch to your actual garment at least one of those suckers is going to act up and become a tangled mess that is so hard to fix and at that point the outfit is finished so not at a place that you can even do much about it easily. One of my friends sort agreed- only she hates all non quilt related sewing so avoids buttons or zippers entirely.

My sewing room is out of control AGAIN.- So even though I have two sewing projects for clients and two for myself, that's not even counting my "Projects in Planning" list, I need to take some time to clean and corral wayward material and notions and yarn. I think I am a "Maxine" but really aspire to "Martha Stewart". Fellow Maxines tell me that we are more creative than the Marthas of the world- but I doubt it when one spends time looking for the buttons that I know I saw last week- when they weren't needed!

I just put the 35th lid on my peach jam, peaches courtesy of a Friend's tree- next week I will do about 6 or 12 jars of strawberry jam before the strawberry man a mile down the road finishes up his stand for the year and plows his bushes down. Since I am allergic to strawberries I sure won't go overboard, making just enough to keep the troops happy! next week I also need to make my grapefruit jelly for the year- probably about 30 or 40 jars. In case any one wonders about the over abundance of jams/jellies- they make great gifts and I can't remember when I last bought any for the house hold. I am going to try making small batches of jams and jellies in my bread machine- it has a jam cycle which I tried with mangoes. it makes about 4-6 jars at a time, simple and good.

Saddles of Joy is a small nonprofit organization in Yuma County, Arizona. Saddles of Joy provides therapeutic riding services to children with special needs whether their needs are physical, mental or emotional. Our horses are the therapists that work wonders for these children. We work with approximately 200 special needs children in our local schools and through private sessions. In order to provide the children and the horses a safe environment, we need to replace our aging supply of safety helmets and belts to protect the children and the horses that they ride. Our present stock is limited, resulting in fewer children able to ride at any one time. By replacing our old stock, ill fitting safety equipment will be a thing of the past. By receiving this grant, Saddles of Joy can immediately purchase this equipment in time for the school children to use in their riding classes as part of their Individual Education Programs. The children, horses and volunteers will all benefit from this grant. Many of our children are able to make great strides in their development and education through our riding program

Camping equipment is stored under Heather's bed since she is away at college free up a whole shelf. My "office" including family mailing supplies and the family printer is in one corner- that freed up a whole counter alone making room for my Juki and my poor limping Serger to stay up and ready for sewing. I am taking inventory for my notions and I discovered that while I generally have them stashed in drawers and bins, they just aren't labeled well enough for quick reference.
I am trying to find an easy way to organize buttons and am open to suggestions!CraftedbyKimberleyDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16887421603359335978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7752076570766745198.post-53550897151432888292011-05-15T09:53:00.001-07:002011-05-15T09:53:06.817-07:00Peaches

A friend gave us a bushel of peaches from their tree, we ate our fill of fresh peaches but since they were getting very ripe we needed to do more- so I made a batch of peach jam which has turned out beautifully. We still had loads of peaches and no more pectin so after a web search I decided to do peach butter in my crock pot, that one I am not so sure about... never having had fruit butter I am not sure of the value vs. jam. Things were going smoothly until I put a TABLESPOON of Cayenne pepper into the pot by mistake instead of cinnamon. Luckily I caught before I stirred it in so it sat on top of the peaches. I managed to skim most of it out and the rest I stirred in. Brad was helping me peel the millions of peaches and asked me why I gasped. I told him "no reason" and added the cinnamon, 1/2 the cloves and allspice- stirred well. Preliminary tastes give a slight bite but I think I can pass it off on the cloves! I am not fessing up- ROFL.

I am buckling down to really learn the ins and outs of EQ6 ( in time for them to release EQ7! ) In the past I have been lazy, just learning enough to get a layout, yardage and play with colour. Our DD Heather learned the program in 2 minutes flat without the manuals- mom not so much.

It sounded so simple- just go online and get my EIN number, well after filling out pages of online work I push "submit" AND..... I get one of the following messages: this site is unavailable until 6:00 am EST, (3 am my time and no it didn't work then either!) or if I try during business hours ( eastern) I am told that due to high demand only a limited number of applicants will be accepted EACH DAY- really now? The hours listed on the website are M-F, 6:00 am- 12:30 am, Sat. & Sun they are from 6 pm to midnight eastern time. That being said, I finally tried by phone several times and finally today got a human on line, this person was not happy that I refused to go back to the online service or do a mail one which would take 4 to 6 weeks and insisted that we do the phone app. right now. I wasn't letting the human get away from me! That is done. my sales tax paperwork has been held up waiting on this. Now I can get moving. In the meantime I have moved my sewing to the family room to try and keep cool, our air conditioner gave up the ghost and we are in the midst of getting bids which is harder than it sounds - two companies have been no shows, one company spent 5 minutes at the house and is telling us something vastly different than the 2 companies that actually seem to be prepared to give us serious bids. Yuma has gotten slightly warm with our temps running in the high 90's

I do not have really great graphic editing software - and at the cost it will be a while before I do. In the meantime paint and Irfan view will just have to do. I am on hold while wading though the tax paperwork needed, at least publicly, behind the scenes my sewing machine is busy. My kids feel like the cobbler's kids, my son needs a new quilt and my daughter is waiting on a new skirt, though in her case she does share the blame equally. Heather has yet to try on the basted skirt and mail it back with the needed alterations. She came home from college last week and forgot the skirt but she is coming home for Mother's day. It will be nice to see her with or without the skirt!CraftedbyKimberleyDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16887421603359335978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7752076570766745198.post-91328011857167315692011-05-01T15:36:00.001-07:002013-10-15T15:29:42.508-07:00How did life get so complicated?

I decided that I would open my own craft business on line at Etsy and Fireart- Sounded so simple, just get sewing right? Actually wrong, I now have decisions to make; logo? policies- pricing, marketing etc. the actual sewing is the easiest part. I have a fledgling Logo that needs a little more tweaking but really it is almost there. I am aiming for a fall opening and plan to spend the hot summer finishing up some baby quilts and working on wall hangings and some placemats and toppers.
